If you’ve been working toward a goal for some time, you know that success is not one singular moment, but rather a collection of achievements over a longer period of time. In fact, success could more or less be described as continuous forward progress — an evolution of you as whole. This evolution could include great strides in your abilities, accomplishments, and sphere of influence.
But the journey is a difficult one, right? One step forward, two few steps back. There are always obstacles to overcome and difficulties to endure. Over time, it’s easy to feel worn down. Some may even consider quitting. Constant adversity has the ability to make one question whether he or she can truly experience sustainable success.
The truth of the matter is that sometimes this adversity is not just a matter of outside forces at play. You may actually be your own biggest threat to success. But how is this possible? Well, it is possible and likely if you have not yet taken these specific steps toward igniting your success for the long-term.
FOCUS ON QUALITY
In order to move toward success, you must be living a life that values quality over quantity. This not only refers to the quality of the work you produce, but the quality of your life as a whole. Are you surrounding yourself with motivated, positive people? Are you engaging in meaningful, fulfilling activities? Are you eating healthy, nutritious food and exercising regularly? By holding yourself to a higher standard in all areas of your life, you will set off a chain reaction that will carry this “quality mindset” into your professional life. You will treat each interaction, project, or deal with only the highest quality of your efforts, and it will be because of this critical shift in your mindset.
PRIORITIZE THE ESSENTIALS
In order to focus on quality, it often involves reducing the “quantity” of tasks, activities, or distractions in your life. In doing so, you are prioritizing the essentials to your well-being. These essentials could vary depending on your personal opinion, but I consider them to include relationships, physical health, financial health, and spirituality. If you starve these areas, certainly you will not be able to thrive professionally, as you will be struggling to maintain efficiency at such a basic level. You’re probably not neglecting these areas intentionally, but as it so often happens, “life” can get in the way. The day to day problems can seem more important or urgent and are handled first, meanwhile these essentials are delayed. This is a mistake you do not want to make. You need to make sure your basic needs are met before you can begin to thrive professionally.
LIVE WITH INTENTION AND AUTHENTICITY
This may be the most important step. In order to experience long-term success, you need to be the real you every single day. Embrace your authenticity and celebrate the unique person who you are. Make a commitment to live each day with an optimistic vision of what you want to achieve, with your ideals, values, and goals top of mind. Keep your vision of success always in the forefront of your mind. At first, this may seem difficult, but over time it will become second nature. You will begin to model the success you had wanted to achieve. Before you know it, the distant vision of your ideal “you” will be your new reality. And it will only have become possible because you embraced your originality and carried out each day with purpose and intent to create the life you wanted to live.
